Throughout the whole night, a male ostrich has been guarding his most-prized treasure: a nest full of eggs – the next generation. At over 5,199 metres, it’s the second highest mountain in Africa. To survive here you need a thick skin – and the fur of the cheeky little rock dassies is thick enough to endure the coldest winter. Three male lions scan a thirsty buffalo herd in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. They hunt down a buffalo calf but the predators cannot yet feast in peace. The calf’s mother seeks revenge. A long, exhausting day in Africa draws to a close. Under a dome of twinkling stars, the day shift tries to rest. Tomorrow will bring life, death, failure and success all over again.
